Adding Hard Drives and Creating Volumes in Windows Server 2012
description
Info
Level: Intermediate
Presenter: Eli the Computer Guy
Date Created: April 12, 2013
Length of Class: 30:12
Research Assistance:
Tracks
Windows Server 2012
Prerequisites
Comfortable with basic Windows 2012 Administrative tasks
Purpose of Class
This class teaches students to use Disk Management to ad Hard Drives to a system and to create usable Volumes to store data.
Class Notes
To manage Hard Drives Go To: Server Management -- Tools -- Computer Management -- Disk Management
Basic Disks can only have 4 partitions and no fancy functionality.
Dynamic Disks allow you to create RAID, Extend/ Shrink Partitions
Types of Volumes
Simple -- Basically an old fashioned partition
Spanned -- Allows multiple Hard Drives to be seen as one
RAID 5 -- Standard Disk Striping with Parity
Mirroring - Standard Mirroring
Striping -- Standard RAID Striping
GPT Partitioning allows partitions over 2 TB in size
Don't try to create RAID 5, Mirroring or Striping in a Virtual Environment (It will crash the virtual machine)
Corrections
Lab Setup Used in Demonstration
The ETCG Host Computer Specs are:
ASUS Model: CM6870US01
16 GB of RAM
1 TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
i7 3.4 GHz Intel Processor

process with Windows Server 2012, allowing for easy extension and shrinking of volumes.', 'The necessity of extreme caution when dealing with server hard drives and volumes, due to the potential irreversible damage from small mistakes.', 'The importance of having recent backups to mitigate potential data loss from catastrophic mistakes.', 'The recommendation to gain practical experience in a lab environment by working with Windows Server 2012 to familiarize oneself with adding drives, creating volumes, and handling server setups.', 'The warning regarding the disabling of hard drive controllers in physical servers and the necessary steps to enable them if a new hard drive is not detected.', 'New virtual hard drives added by creating four 25GB dynamic virtual disks named Disk one, Disk two, Disk three, and Disk four.', 'The chapter demonstrates adding four new physical hard drives to a Windows Server 2012.', 'The server recognizes the new hard drives but they have not been created as volumes, thus not showing up in the File Explorer.', 'At computer management, we can go to disk management to look for newly installed hard drives and initialize them for use.', 'GPT partition table is recommended over MBR as it can handle volumes above two terabytes in size, which MBR cannot support.', 'Server manager is the main hub for server administration, and computer management is where many useful utilities for Windows operating systems are located.', 'The process involves initializing new hard drives, such as disk one, disk two, disk three, and disk four, for system use.', 'MBR will only recognize two terabytes of a larger disk if initialized as such, making it unsuitable for volumes above two terabyte in size.', 'GPT is not recognized by Windows operating systems before Windows Server 2012, but is the preferred choice for modern hard drives unless there is a specific reason not to use it.', 'The spanned volume type allows spanning data across numerous different hard drives, treating them as one single big hard drive. This feature increases storage capacity and improves performance.', 'The preference for spanned volume over RAID options is expressed due to the dislike of RAID and the suggestion to rely on a good backup system instead.', 'A warning is given against setting up RAID in a virtual environment, as it may lead to crashes and issues.', 'Converting basic disks to dynamic disks in Windows Server 2012 allows for the creation of span volumes, RAID, and the ability to shrink and extend volumes, providing a significant increase in functionality for managing hard drives.', 'Suggesting a quick format for large hard drives to save time.', 'Recommending the use of NTFS file system.', 'Windows Server 2012 provides the ability to shrink or extend volumes, allowing for efficient management of hard drive space, particularly beneficial in server environments with limited bays for hard drives.', 'When adding hard drives to a server in Windows Server 2012, they need to be initialized and configured using Server Manager Tools, Computer Management Disk Management, with a suggestion to use GPT partitioning for handling larger volumes, and a warning about the limitations of MBR partitioning.']}
